ARSENAL FC has announced it will be writing to fans who travelled to Old Trafford on Sunday with an offer to cover the cost of a match ticket at a future Premiership away game.

Arsene Wenger described the 8-2 defeat away at Manchester United as “painful” and “humiliating”. Shortly afterwards a club statement said: “Sunday’s result was obviously disappointing for everyone connected with the club. Our travelling fans were magnificent throughout and we want to recognise their fantastic support. We will be writing to them shortly with the details.”

In the wake of the defeat, Wenger has vowed to put things right and expects his players to show the right response when they return to action against Swansea City following the international break.

“The players go away for two weeks and maybe that is a good thing,” Wenger told Arsenal Player. “When they come back we’ll have to prepare. Big scores are humiliating and difficult to swallow but I don’t think they have a special meaning. They are always under special circumstances.”

He added: “It hurts very much. The fans were great and I feel sorry for them.

“They do not want to see their team like that. We can only apologise and come back in our strength and desire in the next game.”
