YOUNGSTERS from William Ellis School and La Sainte Union in Highgate “showed tremendous strength and stamina” as they dominated the Federation Rowing Championships.

Pupils had to tackle a draining two-minute individual sprint in a series of two-hour competitions ranging from Year 7 to Years 10 and 11.

They then had to take part in an energy-sapping relay race, where each rower had to compete for another minute.

Under the guidance of coach Artur Szymanski, William Ellis stormed to victory over their rivals to win all four age groups in the boys’ event.

LSU matched the impressive feat as they won all four of the girls’ Camden School Sports Federation titles as hours training with teacher Alex Suffren paid off.

School Sports Co-ordinator Jackie Charlton said: “All eight of the competitions were superb. There was a real spirit within the teams, and a real competitive edge. At the end of the two minutes the rowers were exhausted, and then they had to do another minute for the relays. All the rowers showed tremendous strength and stamina.”
