A STUNNING knock of 119 from Evan Flowers wasn’t enough to earn North Middlesex an opening day win away at rivals Hornsey on Saturday.

North  Middlesex won the toss and elected to bowl, hoping that the humid conditions following overnight rain would benefit their seam attack. Things didn’t go to plan, however, as Hornsey raced to 72-1 inside 15 overs. The Midd turned to spin with Jaron Semper taking 4-74 off 21 overs.

But Hornsey still managed to muster a score of 232-7 off 53 overs before declaring, largely thanks to Deepesh Makwana who hit a massive 103 off 126 balls.

The Midd made a stuttering start to their innings as they slipped to 47-2 off nine overs. But Flowers sparked a spectacular turnaround as he scored 119 off 111 balls, including 18 fours and a six.

With wickets falling around him, lack of a solid partner in the middle proved costly as Hornsey dismissed North  for 213 in the 49th over to seal a narrow 19-run victory.
