THREE top juniors returned to the ring on Friday when they stepped between the ropes at the Rocket in Holloway for the Times ABC show.
Davoud Qauyumi showed his mettle as he recorded a points win over rival Grant Davityan of West Ham ABC in the 60kg division.
The 16-year- old, who trains at Islington Boxing Club in Archway, was under tremendous pressure in the opening round as Davityan threw everything he had within the first minute.
Qauyumi managed to absorb the onslaught and turn the tide in the second round as he took over the bout with a string of powerful punches.
In the third and final round Davityan looked drained, allowing Qauyumi to use his jab to maximum effect and claim a points win.
Competing in the 56kg category, Ben Turner gained valuable experience as he took on Zac Chelli of Dale Youth ABC. The 13-year-old was always pressing to take control of the fight, but Chelli’s accuracy and movement proved just too good on the night as he picked up a hard-fought points victory.
Club-mate Son McDonagh also just missed out on the decision in his battle against Jack Brooker of Northolt ABC in the 47kg category.
The 14-year-old, who lost to Brooker in last month’s Schools Championships, enjoyed early success as he landed some solid single shots. But Brooker battled back with slick counter-attacking punches to earn a majority points win.
