Spurs complete the Italian job
BOSS Harry Redknapp sent a message to Spurs fans last night (Wednesday): “Enjoy the Champions League ride!”
Redknapp was speaking after watching his side hold Italian giants AC Milan to a 0-0 draw at White Hart Lane and book a place in the quarter finals of the competition thanks to Peter Crouch’s away goal two weeks ago.
“I think the fans are already dreaming the impossible dream,” he said.
“But let’s be honest, two years ago no one would have seen this coming. Let’s remember this is our first year in the Champions League, and to be in the quarters now is a fantastic achievement. We got through one of the toughest groups, then to do this to AC Milan – now anything else is a bonus.”
While Milan had the lion’s share of the possession for long periods, young Spurs midfielder Sandro provided steel in the middle of the park, while Aaron Lennon offered an outlet, and defenders Michael Dawson and William Gallas kept Milan at bay.
Redknapp, who now has a 10-day wait to see who his side face in the last eight, singled out Brazilian Sandro for special praise.
“He was immense, especially for such a young lad,” said the Spurs manager. “He is powerful, strong and aggressive and he showed that tonight. He really turned in a 90-minute performance for us.”
Redknapp added: “We had to defend for long spells, and it was always going to be nervy when you have a one goal lead.”
