BRITISH number two James Ward is keeping his feet firmly on the ground after receiving a wildcard for Wimbledon.

The Euston ace dominated the headlines this week after putting on a heroic display at Queen’s. The 24-year-old, who grew up in Eversholt Street, is predicted to rise from 216 in the world rankings to about 175 after a surprise run at the Aegon Championships halted only by Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the semi-finals.

James, who started out at Islington Tennis Club in Market Road, is confident he can now break into the top 100. But far from causing an upset at Wimbledon, he admits he probably shouldn’t even be playing in the tournament.

“My ranking is still going to go to about 175, I think. Realistically I really shouldn’t be playing Wimbledon at that ranking. It’s obviously a bonus to be playing and get a wildcard,” he said.
