Local football: City and Islington College charity sevens shoot-out - Galacticos edge Tekkers in final to retain title

CHARITY was the big winner on Wednesday when scores of football teams turned out in force for the City and Islington College Seven-A-Side Champ­ion­ships.

The annual tournament returned for a fifth year at Whittington Park in Islington, and has raised more than £2,500 for various charities. Those chosen this year were the Macmillan Nurses, The Stroke Association, Kick Racism Out of Football and Crisis. 

Overall, 10 teams took part, with Tekkers FC and favourites Gunners Galacticos reaching the final. 

The game ended 1-1 in normal time and neither side could find an extra-time winner.

In the shoot-out, Galacticos handled the pressure better, winning on penalties to retain the trophy they won last year.

Lee Kennedy, who organised the event, and Chris Mozo handed out the medals to the runners-up and winners.

There were also individual  trophies to the top-goalscorer, outstanding player and best goalkeeper of the tournament. 

Peter Sogbodjor, a sports enrichment officer for City and Islington College, said: “It was a great day for great causes and the spirit the tournament was played in was amazing. There was some real talent on view and the Gunners Galacticos fully deserved their win.

“A special thanks must go to Charlie Allen tailors on Upper Street, who sponsored the event and Dennis Peng, student from the sixth-form Centre who refereed.”
