SCORES of skilful footballers from across Camden and Islington have been rising to the challenge of a brand new game.
The London Two-Touch Rulz are proving a big hit, with teams turning out in force in a series of demanding regional heats. And with grand finals looming, organisers Michael Lyle and Charlie Browne are “guaranteeing” the competition will help to improve the standard of football across the country.
There was certainly no problems with levels of skills and technique in Saturday’s north London heats, where three teams from Camden progressed through to the final.
Newtown Youngsters from Highgate qualified in the under-11s age category, while Camden Youngerz and Barcelona Blues progressed in their respective under-14s and under-18s competition.
Islington’s Copenhagen Youth Project will be flying the flag this weekend as they look to stay in the running for a £200 cash prize up for grabs in the final of every age group at the Seymour Leisure Centre in Westminster on July 16.
Michael, who works at the Highgate Newtown Community Centre, is adamant that their competition offers a fresh challenge: “Obviously two-touch itself isn’t something new but we’ve created a tournament to take two-touch skills beyond just a standard training drill,” he said.
“It’s a brand new game that will change the way young people think about football and how they train. It’s more about awareness and how to shield the ball, as well as improving their ball control and skill.”
After watching the latest round of matches at the weekend delighted coach Charlie said: “The standard was outstanding. With the passing, skill, and vision on display they would have put England to shame,
“I guarantee that the format we’re using will improve the standard of play within the country.
“It brings players together, and brings the best out within teams as they have to work together if they want to win.
“What we’d really love now is for any former players or celebrities to join in the fun and show their support for the competition. It would be great to sign them up and have them play a part in July’s big showpiece, just give us a call.”
