ARSENAL have made their first signing of the summer – snapping up teen defender Carl Jenkinson.

The promising 19-year-old become a target for the Gunners following a string of impressive displays for League One side Charlton Athletic.

Predominantly a right-back, the 6ft 1in youngster can also play in central defence. Born in England, Jenkinson also qualifies to represent Finland and has been capped by both countries at youth level. Last season he captained Finland under-19s having qualified to play for them through his mother.

Jenkinson told Charlton’s official website: “I will always be in Charlton’s debt for the training they have given me.

“I’m grateful to the club’s academy and all the coaching staff, so I’m delighted the two clubs have come to an agreement. I hope supporters will understand why I can’t turn down such an opportunity.”

The signing coincides with youngsters Benik Afobe, Chuks Aneke and Oguzhan Ozyakup committing their futures at the Emirates Stadium.

Meanwhile Kieran Gibbs has been forced to withdraw from England’s European under-21 squad. The left-back sustained an ankle problem during England under-21s’ 2-0 friendly win over Norway, ruling him out of the tournament in Denmark which gets under way this weekend.

England coach Stuart Pearce said: “We have to deal with setbacks. It’s unfortunate for Kieran, but he went for a scan yesterday and is in a medical boot.”
