Celebrating Islington’s Stars At The London Youth Games
OLYMPIC hopefuls and future sporting stars donned their Islington colours this week for the London Youth Games at Crystal Palace.
More youngsters than ever before took part in the prestigious competition, helping Islington move up five places on last year’s standings to 26th spot out of the 33 London boroughs.
With more than 850 youngsters playing apart in the games, Team Islington also managed to compete in 14 new events and finished with a total of 829 points following an action-packed weekend.
Among the highlights saw the boys’ athletics team finish second overall in their event, with Filmon Russum collecting an individual bronze medal in the 400m.
There was also double delight in the swimming with Frederick Cornwell winning silver in the junior boys’ 50m backstroke and Sarah Taylor-Reid gaining a bronze in the senior girls’ 50m breaststroke.
Despite missing out on a medal Mia Webster, 11, showed tremendous courage as Islington’s only competitor in the archery, finishing a creditable 24th to gain 19 vital points.
Boys and girls also put in a series of good displays in the mini games. Among the highlights saw the football squad produce some outstanding performances to finish joint third.
