Your Shout - Look who’s chasing that Mickey Mouse trophy now
Published: 27 January, 2011
WITHIN seconds of Cesc Fabregas scoring the third and final goal against Ipswich on Tuesday in the Carling Cup, I got a text off my Gooner mate roaring that “The mighty Arsenal are off to Wembley”.
Literally, Fabregas was still celebrating on my TV as the message came through. As a Spurs fan I remember only too well the stick I got when we won the competition in 2008, smashing a strong Arsenal team 6-2 along the way.
Back then, however, the Carling Cup was a Mickey Mouse trophy for teams who are happy to lift any old tin cup because they weren’t good enough to win one of the major prizes. That was the view at least of all the Arsenal fans who had my number. Funny how times change. Suddenly it’s the Gonners who will take any trophy that they can, and the Carling Cup is something special again.
I can only assume that if it’s the only trophy that they win this season there will be an open-top bus parade around Islington.
