UNBEATEN Welterweight Jordan Grannum was king of the ring on Sunday when he dominated his final at the National Senior Novice ABA Championships in Ilford.
The highly-rated 18-year-old, inset, who won a total of seven bouts to reach the Class ‘A’ final, turned on the style as he totally outclassed Kevin Cubbin from Liverpool.
All the effort put in to training at the Islington Amateur Boxing Club in Archway payed off as Grannum used his jab to maximum effect, constantly spearing Cubbin with single, double and triple jabs. Reinforced by a tremendous left hook, a powerful right hand and excellent movement, Grannum recorded a huge 31-9 points victory after three impressive rounds.
Meanwhile club-mate Patrick Ward was in sensational form on Saturday when he beat Daniel Barrett to secure a place in the semi-finals of the London Schools Championships. Ward, 14, displayed some well-timed counter-punches, solid straight shots and hooks as he gained a majority decision in the North-West London class 2 44-46kg final. It was an energetic performance from Ward considering he had boxed just two nights earlier when he beat Danny Keenan in the semi-finals at the Boston Dome in Tufnell Park.
It was a mixed night for Islington ABC, who saw Son McDonagh, 14, narrowly lose out to Jack Brooker in the semi-final of the class 3 46-48kg category.
