A NEW football team might just have to invest in a trophy cabinet in their very first season after taking the Islington Midweek League by storm.

Players from Regent’s Park Estate Football Club are quickly making a name for themselves at the artificial pitches in Market Road as they continue to chase silverware on four fronts.

The unbeaten team are four points clear at the top of the Division Two table after beating Camden Lions 6-1 in their last league outing.

Harry Hughes bagged a brace, while leading scorer Alfie Rogers, Danny Syer, Edward Stopps and Gary Smith were also all on target.

In Syer, Rogers and Ricky Lucas the club boasts three players who have all reached double figures this season.

Their goals could prove vital as Regent’s Park Estate also chase success in the Ken Doherty Memorial Cup, the Invitation Cup and the Jack Walker Shield.

Manager Des Casey, who runs the side with assistant manager Tony Petts, said: “Most of the boys have played together before in other teams, but this is the first team they’ve represented the area where they live.

“Most of them haven’t played for three or four years and are really enjoying being back on the pitch.

“The results that they’ve had and the success they are enjoying is because of the camaraderie within the team and the appetite they all have to win trophies. They just love to play football, and are making up for lost time

“We’re in a strong position to win the league, we just have to maintain the high standard that has seen us remain unbeaten in the league so far.

“Still being in three cup competitions will stretch our squad to the limit, but hopefully we’ll rise to that challenge.

“To win anything in our first year together would be a great achievement.”
