CHAMPIONS Phoenix fired a warning shot to their title rivals in the Camden Sunday League when they smashed six goals past CS Maritimo at Hackney Marshes.
Star striker Anthony Clarke was in sensational form as he scored a hat-trick.
Despite Clarke’s fantastic finishing, the man-of-the-match award went to Dave Dawson, who put in a commanding display in midfield. Gio Falzone marked his league debut with a deadly double strike, while Justin Pryce was also on target as Phoenix ran out 6-1 winners in Division One.
Delighted manager Dave Harber said afterwards: “We came together as a team and played some tremendous football. If anyone wants to take our title they’ll have a fight on their hands because we’re not surrendering it easily.”
The only other top-flight game saw newcomers Lord Southampton net a comfortable 4-1 win over Cobden Athletic. John Purcell opened the scoring from close range before Elvyn Blackwood added the second with a powerful header. The reliable Jason Medford scored the third from the penalty spot after Alexi Nicoloau was brought down in the box.
Man-of-the-match Medford got his second goal of the game with a simple finish after the Cobden keeper could only parry Tom Looney’s thunderous free-kick.
Division Two leaders Athletico Annies made it three wins out of three with a 2-1 victory over Crouch End Rangers. Rivals MDM also have nine points having won all three of their opening games, including a 3-1 victory over Mayville on Sunday.
In Division Three league newcomers Chalk Scratchings are top after extending their unbeaten start to the season with a resounding 9-3 win over FC Bertoli.
Other results saw the Boston Celtics beat Surreal Madrid 5-1, while Boundary Estate netted a 4-2 win over River Fleet.
