MAROUANE Chamakh scored twice as Arsenal got their season back on track with a vital 2-0 win at Wolves last night (Wednesday).

The Gunners got off to the perfect start when Chamakh headed home Alex Song’s cross after just 39 seconds. Andrey Arshavin should have doubled the lead when he raced clear of the Wolves rearguard, only to see his effort well blocked by goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann.

The visitors had to wait until the third minute of injury-time before making the game safe when Chamakh finished off a sweeping counter-attack by lofting the ball into an empty net.

In the build-up for the trip to Molineux Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger said the Premier League was the most “open title race for a long, long time”.

That certainly seems to be the case as Arsenal find themselves just five points behind leaders Chelsea following last night’s win, despite having already lost three games this season.

The Frenchman said: “The demands on the teams in Europe are very high and the level of the less prestigious teams in the Premier League has gone up so I believe everybody will drop points.

“Chelsea have lost a couple. You must give them the credit that it was at difficult places at Manchester City and Liverpool so that’s never easy, but at least that keeps the league tight.

“All the teams in the Premier League can remain disciplined for 90 minutes therefore you have a little bit less difference made in the second half than years before.”
