THE steep hills of Highgate offered cyclists a gruelling test on Thursday at the inaugural Rollapaluza Urban Hill Climb.

More than 100 competitors were cheered on as they pedalled up the steep incline of Swains Lane in a race which mimicked the Tourmalet section of the Tour de France cycle race.

Club cyclists, who included riders from Condor Cycles, Mosquito Bikes and Finsbury Park CC, joined commuters, first-time racers and elite cyclists in the race, which was won by Chris Metcalfe of Matlock Cycling Club.

The women’s race was won by Claire Beaumont of Condor Cycles of Gray’s Inn Road, King’s Cross, who came home six seconds clear of the chasing pack.
