Gala medals extravaganza

Camden Swiss Cottage swimmers’ supershow

 

THERE was gala glory for speedster Indigo Mathews at the weekend when she won eight medals for Camden Swiss Cottage. 

The triumphant 10-year-old (pictured) was in outstanding form as she collected three golds, four silvers and a bronze medal. 

Indigo’s golds came in the 200m freestyle, the 200m butterfly and the 200m breaststroke. 

Overall, a strong team of 58 swimmers returned home from their meet in Cambridge with an impressive 82 medals, 26 of which were gold. 

Joining Indigo on the winners’ podium was Emily House, who won all five of her events. 

The 10-year-old glided through the water as she touched home first in the 100m and 400m individual medley, the 50m and 400m freestyle and the 200m backstroke. 

Other multi-medalists were Kelly Hookway and Jessica Hobbs, who both won two golds and three silvers, and Olivia Willis, who won a gold, six silvers and a bronze. 

Meanwhile the boys’ star performance came from Hok Iao Wong, who recorded winning times in the 100m breaststroke, the 200m freestyle and the 400m individual medley. 

The talented 11-year-old also collected a silver in the 200m breaststroke and a bronze in the 50m freestyle. And the medal count continued to climb with Scott Broadis winning two golds, a silver and two bronze. 

Other headliners were Robert Dos Santos, 11, who swam to gold in the 100m butterfly, took silver in the 100m individual medley and bronze in the 400m freestyle and 200m butterfly. Leo Jaggs, 15, rounded off a magnificent weekend with a gold in the 100m backstroke and silver in the 100m breaststroke and the 200m backstroke. 

Camden Swiss Cottage coach Mark Allen said afterwards: “I’m very pleased with how the team performed, especially as we had so many younger swimmers qualifying for the event. 

“The Cambridge gala is great preparation for the Middlesex County Championships next month.”
