DEBUTANT Ryan Turner got his boxing career off to a winning start with a first-round victory at Hayes Boxing Club.

The Camden-based Islington ABC Junior held the height, weight and reach advantage over his opponent Louis Lye. But Lye, fighting in front of his home crowd, got off to the better start, punching with both hands and forcing Turner to retreat to the ropes.

More quick-fire punches had Turner (pictured) covering up, but the 16-year-old north London fighter weathered the early storm, coming back with a couple of jarring rights of his own.

Turner was starting to get his range and confidence when the referee temporarily halted the contest to allow a doctor to attend to a split on Lye’s left eyelid. The doctor waved the action over and Turner was awarded a first-round victory, courtesy of the injury.
