SCHOOLS from both Camden and Islington netted glory in the grand finals of the prestigious Mitre Cup on Thursday, at St Aloysius College playing fields.

Honours were shared in a thrilling Year 11 final between William Ellis and South Camden Community School.

South Camden, who took two coaches of supporters to the game, got off to the worst possible start when Messoud Djaider was sent off for retaliating.

In the confusion the referee punished the wrong player, dismissing Jonathan Cervantes by mistake. William Ellis took advantage of the extra player when captain Jack Sawyer gave the Highgate-based school the lead from the penalty spot after Josh La Pompe was brought down. Any hopes South Camden had of getting their hands on the winners’ shield looked to be over when Mahamud Salah was sent off for his second bookable offence.

The Somers Town team were, however, given a way back into the game when Kieron Keep was sent off for William Ellis. South Camden pushed forward with new belief and were rewarded for their persistence when Abdulkadir Siyaad headed home from close range to level the scores at 1-1.

In a dramatic finale, South Camden were given the chance to win the shield outright when Mohamed Eisa was brought down in the area. Abdulkadir hit his shot well-enough, but Ellis keeper Findlay Williams made an outstanding save to ensure the spoils were shared.

• On the opposite pitch Islington’s St Aloysius School (pictured) beat Haverstock to win the Corrigan Shield. The triumphant Year 8 team were in outstanding form as they secured an impressive 3-0 victory on their home pitch.
