INSTRUMENT for observing water bounce”, 2010, has won the second Zabludowicz Collection Future Map Prize. Artist Josh Baum was awarded the prize last Wednesday by Anita Zabludowicz at the opening reception for the Future Map 10 exhibition hosted by the Zabludowicz Collection in Kentish Town.

The Zabludowicz Collection Future Map Prize was founded in 2009 to support one graduating student from University of the Arts London’s annual Future Map exhibition. This year offers up an interactive show packed with performance, participation, sculpture and installation.

Josh Baum, an MA Fine Art graduate from Central Saint Martins, faced tough competition from the other dynamic exhibitors in Future Map 10.

His recent works are all described as “instruments” which in the process of their design and production bring together the subject and the object; for example an instrument that is built to fill a cup with water becomes about the water itself not about the cup.

“My works are generally conceived as instruments where an event at the heart of the work serves as a lens through which a subject can be observed,” he says. “Through the building of the work, there is often a conflation where the subject and the instrument become one; where although the instrument begins as a way to read a text or fill a cup, it ends up being more about observing the nature of water.”

His prize is a £3,000 award and a chance to make a commercial edition with the Zabludowicz Collection.

The aim of the award is to enable the winning practitioner to develop new work in the months following their graduation, by both supporting them financially and facilitating a new limited edition by them, fostering a sustainable future for the artist.

Future Map 10 is London’s pre-eminent annual exhibition of recent graduates from University of the Arts London and is hosted by the Zabludowicz Collection during Testing Ground for art and education.

The exhibition runs from January 13-February 6 at 176 Prince of Wales Road, NW5, Thursday-Sunday 12-6pm or by appointment. Admission free, www.zabludowiczcollection.com; http://futuremap.arts.ac.uk
