One Week With John Gulliver - Who was brought to book by Piers?
Published: 25 March, 2010
IT was in many ways one of the most extraordinary get-togethers I have ever attended.
There they were, all the old faces of ex-councillors who had found some kind of a life at the Town Hall over the decades, coming together on Monday at Hampstead Town Hall for Piers Wauchope’s political history of the borough.
The atmosphere had the flavour of an Agatha Christie who-dunnit? where the suspects gather together at the end waiting to discover who actually did do it.
There was no danger, of course, that any of the old political gang would end up in the dock, but they may have felt they were at risk of finding nasty things said of them in the book.
After all, it covered nearly 50 years, and lots of bodies must have got buried in that time.
You could see the glint of anxiety in their eyes as they cross-checked their names in the index with passages in the book.
But few, if any, seemed upset about what had been said of them.
