FOR those who knew campaigning left-wing firebrand Ellen Luby, the roll of thunder that accompanied the unveiling of a bench in her memory was particularly fitting.
Friends and family agreed it was as if Ellen, who died last year, was shaking her fist in her indomitable style at those who had come to honour her remarkable life.
The memorial bench is in St George’s Gardens, Camden Street, Camden Town, where about 20 members of her family and comrades met on Saturday.
Ellen was well known for her frequent heckling at council meetings, her campaigning for tenants’ rights and the key role she played in the St Pancras rent strike of 1960.
Family and friends heard Labour councillor Roger Robinson lead the tributes.
The Somers Town councillor said: “I knew Ellen for over 45 years, and though we didn’t always agree, she was a trusted and loyal friend to so many.”
