Sisters pay tribute to Buster Martin

THREE Canonbury sisters who helped found the popular OAP band The Zimmers this week paid tribute to fellow singer Buster Martin, who has died aged 104.

Dolores Murray, 68, and sisters Netta, 72, and Sylvia, 70, who attended Buster’s funeral in south London yesterday (Thursday), said he will be sadly missed.

Dolores added: “We lost our lead singer, Archway man Alfie Carretta last year, aged 93. Now Buster’s gone. But the band goes on.”

Between them, the three sisters have 12 children, 24 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. 

The Zimmers were formed following a campaign to save the Mecca Bingo Hall in Essex Road four years ago. 

About 40 OAPs – including half a dozen from the Islington Save our Bingo campaign – were chosen from around the country to record The Who’s My Generation at the legendary Studio Two at Abbey Road to prove that older people have still got what it takes.
