THE author of Paddington Bear was guest presenter of art prizes at Edward Wilson Primary in Paddington.

Michael Bond, the creator of the world famous, marmalade-eating bear from Peru told the children about his inspiration for his popular series.

He said: “It was Christmas time and started to snow so I went into the toy section of Selfridges and a little bear was sitting there all alone. I thought ‘I can’t leave him all alone on Christmas’. He caught my fancy and, as I lived near Paddington, I thought I’d call him that.”

The author’s wife, Sue Bond and Alison Shields of Paddington Central, a nearby corporate management centre who sponsored the event, chose the winners.

Teacher Martin Stevenson said: “The children, especially the VI [visually impaired] need good role models and an opportunity to use their imaginations.”
