Living Wage campaign celebrated 10 years on

Published: 6th May, 2011

TOWN Hall leader Councillor Catherine West joined campaigners on Monday – May Day – to celebrate 10 years of the Living Wage campaign.

More than 2,000 people took part in the event which began at Southwark Cathedral with a mass presided over by London’s three Catholic archbishops. Campaigners from churches, schools and mosques, as well as ordinary people from across London, gathered at the Methodist Central Hall in Westminster to celebrate the achievements of the campaign and to mark the first Day for Civil Society.

These include the formal adoption of the London Living Wage by Islington Council last year. The Town Hall has pledged to pay all its staff at least the minimum it takes to live in London, one of the most expensive cities in the world.

The wage is currently set at £8.30 an hour.

“Nobody should do a hard day’s work for less than they can live on,” Cllr West said. “Our borough has some of the most deprived communities in the country living alongside some of the wealthiest. Yet we know a more equal society benefits everyone.”
