A FEMALE student was stabbed in the leg following an argument inside Westminster Kingsway College in King’s Cross yesterday (Wednesday).

The 18-year-old woman was taken to hospital with wounds to her leg following the attack shortly after 10.30am. Her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

A male student was arrested and taken to a nearby police station.

Witnesses said a fight had taken place near the college and continued in the entrance hall of the building. It is thought the girl was stabbed in the library.

One student said: “There was a fight across the road, and when they came back into college they were still fighting. A girl got in the middle of the fight while she was trying to break it up.”

Students were evacuated through the rear entrance of the building while police cordoned off the entrance hall. Forensic staff could be seen entering the building.

Students were later diverted to the rear door where a security guard was stationed. A spokesman for Westminster Kingsway College said students involved had been banned from the campus while police investigate the incident.

He added: “We can confirm that an incident took place today involving a small number of our students. The college is co-operating fully with police to ensure those responsible are dealt with appropriately. Until the investigation is complete the students involved will not be allowed on any college site and will continue their studies at home.”

College principal Andy Wilson said: “The college has a programme of activities to discourage students from engaging in anti-social or violent behaviour.

“From surveys we undertake with our students we know they overwhelmingly regard the college as a safe place. However, occasionally arguments that begin outside the college are brought on-site and there can be unfortunate consequences as in this incident. This is a rarity and the college will continue to operate as normal.”

In October 2009, a male student was stabbed while on his way home from the college.
