BUSES are being diverted away from the Royal Free while a new power supply is fitted to the Hampstead hospital.
The entrance to Pond Street has been closed at the South End Green end and the main road – which includes access to the hospital car park and the central ambulance station – has been reduced to one lane.
Elderly people have complained about lengthy journeys to the post office and lack of information about bus route changes.
Hampstead ward Cllr Chris Knight said: “Transport for London have a made a right balls-up of this.”
The first phase of the works is expected to last until May, when workmen will begin digging up Fleet Road.
The Royal Free was partially closed last year because of a power failure. But a spokeswoman said:“The works are being carried out by UK Power Networks and is part of their long-term strategy to upgrade the local electricity infrastructure.”
