THERESA May was in Hampstead on Thursday night to gee up the Tory troops with a talk in which she said voters needed to be repeatedly reminded that past Labour regimes had run up government debts.
Home Secretary Ms May said that people should never forget the note left by former Treasury minister Liam Byrne as he cleared his office following last year’s change of power.
Quoting it, Ms May said: “There’s. No. Money. Left.”
More than 100 Conservatives were at St Stephen’s Church in Pond Street for the party’s summer get-together.
“One hundred and twenty million a day is being spent on the debt that Labour racked up – that’s more than we spend on the police, prisons, probations and courts together,” said Ms May, who once tried to become the Conservative candidate for Holborn and St Pancras.
She added: “That puts into perspective how big a problem we’ve got. Labour are still deficit-deniers. Labour still refuse to accept the mess that they left behind. They will sit there and do this in debate after debate. They never say where they would make cuts.”
