Street booze ban – Islington's controlled drinking zone widened

A CLAMPDOWN on drinking in the streets is expected to be given the go-ahead on Tuesday when the Town Hall rubber-stamps plans for a borough-wide controlled drinking zone.

The CDZ gives police extra powers to confiscate booze from trouble-makers or order them to stop drinking.

There are already five mini-CDZs in Islington, but these have resulted in drinkers spilling over into other areas. 

The borough-wide CDZ follows a consultation which saw 84 per cent of respondents in favour of the plan – with the proviso that more is done to help homeless street drinkers.

Hackney Council, which introduced a borough-wide CDZ last year, said it had seen a 38 per cent drop in calls to the police about people being drunk and disorderly.
