Islington’s cleansing staff ballot for strike
Published: 24th June, 2011
UNION members working for Islington’s cleansing service have voted for a ballot on industrial action in a row over sick pay.
The GMB union have accused private contractor Enterprise of deducting too much money from employees who are unable to work due to injury or illness.
Labour councillor Gary Doolan, who is the local branch secretary of the union, said: “Enterprise has been deducting the wrong rates of sick pay attendance allowance for years and our members want their money back. These unlawful deductions must stop.”
Cllr Doolan claimed that higher-paid officers within the service are not similarly penalised like manual workers.
He added: “We’ve attempted to resolve this issue on many occasions but the employer is refusing to meet and negotiate.”
