WELL-KNOWN characters from the Caledonian Road, including the legendary Dave Elvis, launched the nine-day countdown to the Cally Festival this week.

A large section of the road between Offord Road and Bingfield Street will be closed to traffic for the very first time in more than 40 years for the event on Sunday July 3, from noon-6pm.

The programme includes a craft and food market, a live music stage with top bands, street theatre, street art, live coverage of the Wimbledon tennis finals on giant screens, children’s activities and creative workshops.

Dave, who will be singing Elvis hits on the day, said he hoped everyone would come to the festival. “The Cally is really buzzing these days. We’ve got a lot of fantastic restaurants and cafés.” Labour councillor Paul Convery said the Cally, with its cosmopolitan atmosphere, is the “heart and soul” of the borough.
