TOWN Hall chiefs have hit back at opponents of a “monstrous edifice” mini-power station that will be built on the car park of a housing estate.
Environment chief Councillor Paul Smith said the combined heat and power unit in Central Street, Bunhill. would supply 700 homes, heat the rebuilt swimming baths and cut carbon emissions by 2,500 tonnes a year.
Last week residents who live near the proposed site said it would be an eyesore as it towered 60 feet into the air and accused Islington Council of a “stitch-up” at the planning hearing which granted permission as the Town Hall was also the applicant.
Leo Chapman, of the Peabody Estate Residents Association in nearby Whitecross Street, said this week that the council wanted to build a “network” of the power stations.
“There could be resident eruptions right up to the next council election in 2015,” he warned.
