SECURITY has been stepped up at a university halls after a young woman was stabbed in the street in broad daylight.

The 24-year-old victim is in a stable condition in hospital after being knifed in the back in Finchley Road in an apparently unprovoked attack outside student housing belonging to King’s College London shortly before 11.30am yesterday morning (Wednesday). It is believed the victim is  not a student at the university and police have not made any arrests.

Police cordoned off around 50 metres of pavement opposite Weech Road and the tape remained in place last night as officers took photos at the scene.

Some of the 200 students in the halls said they were being given police escorts around the campus behind Finchley Road and that ID checking had been tightened up.

Residents near the scene were also told to remain indoors while police with sniffer dogs searched for the attacker.

A postgraduate student at King’s who asked to remain anonymous said: “The police cordoned off one of the dorms but did not do door-to-door enquiries. Students are extremely upset about this. The stabbing took place on a road we all use.

“As of 5.30 today, the Hampstead residence office has not emailed us about the stabbing.

“This is not the first time the residence office has failed to pass on information pertaining to our wellbeing.”

A spokeswoman for Camden police said: “Police called at 11.22am on Wednesday January 5 to reports of a woman stabbed in the street on Finchley Road, NW3. Police and London Ambulance Service attended to find a 24-year-old woman suffering from a stab wound to the back. She has been taken to hospital and is in a stable condition. Detectives from Camden Borough are investigating.”

Nobody from King’s College, London was available to comment.
