Mayor Jonathan Simpson launches his search for the unsung musical heroes

CAMDEN’S “Rock ’n’ Roll” Mayor has launched a search for the unsung heroes who help keep the borough at the centre of Britain’s musical map.

In his mayoral chain, Councillor Jonathan Simpson and Mayoress Amy Lamé spent Saturday night DJing at the Barfly nightclub in Chalk Farm. The gig was part of the avid record collector’s year of using the position of borough’s first citizen to support Camden’s music scene.

Now, the mayor says he wants to flag up those who have helped create and maintain Camden’s legendary musical heritage over the years with a special awards scheme.

And the New Journal has teamed up with the mayor’s office in his hunt to find the area’s unsung musical heroes.

They may be musicians, DJs, venue owners or promoters – anybody who has made an exceptional contribution to Camden’s music scene without always getting the praise for their work.

And it’s not all about the nightlife: Cllr Simpson is also looking to those who work in the community. Music teachers or volunteers who might have inspired younger residents can be nominated for an award.

All our readers are welcome to make a suggestion.

It will all climax with a ceremony at the Roundhouse, itself an emblem for Camden’s musical history, on Monday March 28.

West Hampstead resident Boz Boorer, musical director and guitarist for the legendary Morrissey, will be among the judges.

“I feel very proud to be given the chance to honour Camden’s Unsung Heroes,” he said. “People in the heart of the community who bring music to those who can benefit most deserve our praise and recognition.”

The awards are being co-sponsored by King’s Cross Central, Apollo and Bulldog, and will not cost the tax-payer a penny.

Another judge, the broadcaster and journalist Jasmine Dotiwala, said: “Camden is known the world over for its music, but very rarely do we hear about those who take music into communities or bring it to the more vulnerable members of our society. These awards are a wonderful way of recognising all the great work that is being done out there and I feel proud to be taking part.”
