THE secret of the market’s success is that the owners of the shops actually run them, according to crimper Anna Forsling.

“In High Street chains, you’re likely to be served by an employee who has no personal vested interest in you or whether you return,” she said.

“With us its different. The proprietors are on the premises at most of the shops. And the customers’ interests are our interests.

“If they don’t come back, we lose out. We want to be friendly and welcoming but we also have to be friendly and welcoming.”

Anna started up hairdressers the klinik at Exmouth Market in 1998, attracted by the trendsetting but friendly atmosphere beginning to take shape.

She’s thrilled with the market’s coronation as “Best Street in Britain.”

“People go straight past us on the bus down Rosebery Avenue and wouldn’t know we were here because we’re tucked away – but now they will.”
