MONTY Python star Terry Jones helped a Highgate theatre celebrate its birthday on Sunday.

Upstairs at the Gatehouse followed the matinee of its hit show, A Slice Of Saturday Night, with cake-cutting celebrations.

John and Katie Plews have been running the theatre for 13 years – and as a way of thanks hand out awards every year to people who have helped make it a success.

Among the winners of their  “Hugos” on Sunday were Alastair and Anne Macgeorge, from Hampstead Garden Opera, which has for 10 years staged operas at the theatre.

Roger Rowley, who starred as Buddy Holly in the theatre’s production of Buddy last year – the first time the musical had been performed outside the West End – was also presented with an award.

Mr Jones, who lives nearby, said: “It is amazing to have a theatre of this quality so close. I’ve always enjoyed coming here.”
