‘Parsnip pinchers’ grab gourmet grub in Belsize Park

A QUICK-WITTED gang nicknamed the “parsnip pinchers” are believed to be behind a series of gourmet grocery thefts from the doorsteps of homes in Belsize Park.

Residents living in Belsize Crescent have reported dawn thefts in which expensive organic food deliveries are taken from their front doors before they have had a chance to bring them inside.

It is thought the gang follows delivery lorries on their rounds and pounces as soon as they leave.

Last week, two organic food boxes from upmarket company Abel and Cole were stolen from houses in the street before 7.30am. In similar thefts in the past six months groceries from Waitrose were stolen.

While some residents have joked that the crime reminds them of Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables, in which a starving character is imprisoned for stealing bread, others are not so sympathetic.

They say police are not taking the reports seriously and are calling for an increased presence in the area, claiming there has been a noticeable rise in crime over the past six months.

One of the Belsize Crescent victims, who wishes to remain anonymous, said: “Had this happened for the first time, I would not be alarmed. However, in the past six months this street and the streets surrounding have been the subject of serious crimes – a flat being robbed, numerous cars broken into and stolen, and at least three serious incidents where people were beaten up and robbed.

“This groceries theft is not a petty crime but further proof that this street and area are deliberately targeted by criminals.

“I have not seen a policeman walking up this street in the past six months, not even once.”

Roger Montgomery, chairman of Belsize Crescent Neighbourhood Watch, said: “I’ve got to say I’m surprised this is happening. This isn’t poor hungry people trying to stay alive. These are very expensive groceries. 

“From what we know it’s people following vans. Some of the blame lies with the companies. They should improve their service and make sure the goods are inside the house. It is irresponsible.”

Police have assured residents such crimes are rare. 

Sergeant Philip Hewetson, of Frognal and Fitzjohns Safer Neighbourhoods team, said: “The team have been made aware that residents have had items stolen from their doorsteps, such as groceries.  

“I urge people to remain vigilant and when possible not to leave items unattended in public view, which could tempt opportunistic thieves.”
