THE market at Whitecross Street in Finsbury has won praise from town planners.
Improvements to the market were commended in the “best built project” category of the London Planning Awards.
The street’s success follows the recent triumph of nearby Exmouth Market, which was dubbed “Great Street 2011” in a national town planning contest.
Improvements to Whitecross Street market included pedestrianisation, underground electrical supplies for stallholders, new lighting and the creation of “social areas” where people can gather and chat.
Awards spokeswoman Emma Apter said: “A better environment for shoppers has transformed the market. There are now over 60 stallholders. And shops that had been empty for years have now been reopened.”
