ISLINGTON-BASED Morris Charitable Trust is to donate an extra £50,000 to an “innovative charitable  project” which is helping to improve the community.

Jack Morris, chairman of the Business Design Centre at Angel, announced the award this week to celebrate the building’s 25th birthday.

The original building was rescued from demolition in 1981 by entrepreneur Sam Morris. Fully restored, it reopened as the UK’s first integrated trade, exhibition and conference centre in 1986.

The design centre attracts more than half a million visitors every year.

Jack Morris, the youngest of Sam’s five sons, is a principal shareholder along with his four brothers.

The trust, founded three years after the design centre opened, has donated more than £1.5million to charities since 1989. Business Design Centre Group contributes a proportion of its annual profits to the trust.

Jack Morris said that the trust was delighted to announce the extra funding, particularly at a time when the voluntary and charitable sectors in Islington are facing challenging economic circumstances.

He added: “We look forward to receiving applications through the website over the next few months and to hopefully being in a position to announce a suitable and exciting project to receive this support towards the end of the year.”

The Morris Foundation Trust is a founder member of Islington Giving Campaign. For more information about the trust and an application form go to www.morrischaritabletrust.com
