Spending cuts petition arrives on No 10 doorstep

THE battle against the government’s swingeing spending cuts, which will see £52million hacked from Islington’s budget this year, was taken to the Prime Minister’s front door on Wednesday.

Islington’s Labour MPs Jeremy Corbyn and Emily Thornberry were joined by Labour Town Hall leader Councillor Catherine West to present a petition signed by 4,000 residents opposing the cuts.

“This Tory-Lib Dem government is cutting too fast, too deep and targeting those who can least afford it," Cllr West said. “Islington Labour is on the side of our community and we stand united against this vicious attack on the thousands of low-paid families in our borough.”

Ms Thornberry added: “Last week, David Cameron claimed that Labour-led Islington Council was cutting children’s services rather than the chief executive’s pay – when, in fact, the chief exec’s salary has been cut by £50,000 and children’s services will be protected.

“David Cameron should apologise to Islington, and admit that his government is responsible for these reckless cuts to our community.”
