MORE than 180 people attended a terrorism awareness event at City University last week as part of Project Griffin.

The event, jointly hosted by the college and the Metropolitan Police Service, was aimed at improving security and the detection and disruption of terrorist activity.

The invited audience heard presentations from specialist counter-terrorism officers, witnessed a demonstration by police dogs trained in explosive detection and were given an opportunity to question a panel of security experts.

Speakers discussed a range of topics, ranging from how to recognise tactics used by terrorists through to business continuity and emergency planning.

Sergeant Andrew Wadeson, of Islington borough police counter terrorism unit, said: “The purpose of the project is to inform partners of how they can play a role in disrupting and detecting potential terrorist threats.”

Project Griffin was developed to give people increased confidence to report suspicious activity and behaviour to police, using the confidential hotline on 0800 789 321.
