REPUBLICANS have been given the green light to hold a street party on the day of the royal wedding in Red Lion Square.

The Republic group say they will celebrate “democracy and people-power rather than inherited privilege” on April 29 from noon.

Camden Council had earlier banned a proposed party on Earlham Street in Covent Garden,  after landlords Shaftesbury and the Covent Garden Community Association objected.

But just one week later they have agreed to let Republic hold the “Not The Royal Wedding” gathering in the Holborn square. Republic campaign manager Graham Smith said: “I’m sure our street party will be a fantastic day out for republicans, their families and anyone desperate to escape the wedding hype.”

A council spokesman said: “The council has worked constructively with Republic to find an alternative location and we have granted permission for them to use the highway in Red Lion Square.”
