HUNDREDS of residents on the Liverpool Road estate in Holloway joined a special re-creation of a tea party to mark the end of the Second World War on Sunday.
Labour council leader Cllr Catherine West was among guests who turned up for the VE Day (Victory in Europe) celebration, with songs and music from the war, along with cakes and party hats.
It’s all part of the 100th anniversary of the estate, built in 1910 from the legacy of the great financier and benefactor Samuel Lewis (1837-1901) at a cost of £101,000 – taking account of inflation, that’s nearly £9million in today’s money.
One of the oldest residents, Reg Burbidge, who remembered the original VE Day in 1945, said: “It was a great opportunity for residents to get together and have a good time. It was a nice idea and a lovely day. We all enjoyed ourselves.”
