SOAKING and shivering, only his tiny “miaow” saved this lucky three-month-old kitten after he was dumped in a rain-spattered dustbin.
RSPCA officers realised his plight when they saw two eyes peeping out of a black bag inside the bin in Coram Street, Holborn, on Tuesday night.
A concerned neighbour had heard the animal and contacted the charity – saving him from being carted off with the rubbish.
He is now recovering at the Harmsworth Animal Hospital in Finsbury Park.
RSPCA animal welfare officer Jill Sanders was sent to the scene, where she opened the bag to see “two little eyes peering out at me”.
“Just to leave the kitten like that is so sad,” she said. “He was gorgeous and ever so friendly, and there were no signs that he had been badly treated before.
“I hate to think what could have happened.
“He was really quiet when I arrived and I can just imagine that had the dustbin men come along they could very easily have thrown him straight into the truck.”
She added: “There is a real crisis at the moment. Because people don’t have their cats neutered, there are so many unwanted cats and kittens, and our animal centres are full to the brim.”
The incident is not the first of its kind in Camden. In June, a kitten was left in a cardboard box, marked “please take me”, outside Highgate library before being taken to the Cats Protection League in Archway.
Anyone with information about how the kitten ended up in the Holborn bin is urged to call the RSPCA on 0300 123 4999 and quote incident 23 of September 27.
