FIREFIGHTERS are urging people to take extra care in the kitchen as new figures show that kitchen fires in Islington have caused two deaths and 73 injuries in the past five years.
In a bid to reduce the number of kitchen fires – 500 were recorded in the borough during the period – London Fire Brigade is launching COOKSAFE, its first-ever kitchen fire safety campaign.
An open day will take place at Islington Fire Station on Upper Street, from 11am-5pm on Saturday. There will be a range of activities for adults and children, and firefighters will be on hand to offer advice on kitchen safety.
Rhys Powell, London Fire Brigade’s Borough Commander for Islington, said: “Kitchen fires are a real concern for us and the most frustrating thing is that they can usually be prevented.
“Most people think that it won’t happen to them but the figures speak for themselves.”
