ISLINGTON has won international recognition for its progressive breastfeeding policy.

NHS Islington has teamed up with the Town Hall to create a friendly atmosphere for mothers wishing to breastfeed in public places.

The Baby Friendly Initiative was devised by  UNICEF, which  has awarded Islington a certificate of commitment for its work.

It is believed breastfeeding can protect babies from serious illnesses, including gastroenteritis, respiratory and ear infections, cot death, allergies and diabetes. Rosemary Brown, infant feeding co-ordinator, said:  “We know that breastfeeding reduces the mother’s risk of breast and ovarian cancer and diabetes.”
