GREEN-fingered residents in Pimlico braved howling gales to see their prized flowers judged in a competition.

Residents of Glastonbury House on the Abbots Manor estate cowered inside while Chelsea Flower Show judge Jim Buttress inspected their efforts.

Winners included Open Age’s marigold boxes and Mushir Galali, who included aromatic herbs from his native Kurdistan in his planter box.

Mr Buttress said: “The planters show a marvellous cross-section of what you can do in containers and boxes. Some are a mix of colour and vegetables, which is great.

“This area would be a concrete jungle without what residents have created here and they should be very proud.”

The planters outside Glastonbury House were given life last year when residents were encouraged to “adopt a box”. With a high level of interest, a gardening club is now in the pipeline.
