A CANCER charity has made its biggest ever donation to help build a state-of-the-art research and treatment centre in Bloomsbury, writes Tom Foot.

The £10million gift from Macmillan Cancer Support will help University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust secure its vision for cancer care in the 21st century.

The £100m centre will be built in Huntley Street, the former site of the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital, by 2012.

The generous donation was praised at a reception with Conservative Health Secretary Andrew Lansley who said the centre would help create a service that was “amongst the best in the world”.

Macmillan will run a “Wellbeing Centre” in the building and help from diagnosis until after treatment has ended.
