A BRIC-A-BRAC sale raised  £1,000 towards a major church refurbishment project in Islington.

Officials of St Mark’s Church in Myddleton Square, near Angel, were delighted with the tally from the event on Saturday. “It all helps,” said church warden Shirley Duggan.

Two hundred people showed up to St Mark’s Autumn Fair staged in the church with the help of parish groups such as the scouts and guides.

St Mark’s needs the money to complete an interior reworking of the imposing Georgian building to create a community centre.

The nave of the church will be retained for worship but galleries above will converted into rooms for meetings and activities such as keep fit and tai chi. The long-term project, which began in 2002, also includes major roof repairs, new stairs, modernised lighting for the tower and access for people with disabilities.

The parish is seeking cash from public bodies and private benefactors.

“When you are looking for grants, you’ve got to show that you are willing to do your bit,” said Shirley.
