PEOPLE with memories of Ironmonger Row Baths were this week invited to share them with the authors of a book celebrating the facility’s history.

The old Finsbury Council, renowned for socialist radicalism, built the baths in 1931 to provide a place for the poor of the area to wash in the days before bathrooms were common in people’s homes.

In addition to “slipper baths” (ordinary baths), the facility housed a swimming pool, a gym, a laundry and renowned Turkish bath steam rooms.

The Holloway-based Rowan Arts Project would like to hear from anyone with memories of the Ironmonger Row Baths for its book Plunging into History.

The facility is currently closed and undergoing a £16m council refurbishment and the book is due to be published simultaneously with its re-opening in 2012.

Rowan Arts can be contacted on 07975 758 756 or by email at polly@therowanartsproject.com
